The fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty is a specialized type of tummy tuck procedure that is designed to address excess skin and tissue in the abdominal area. This procedure is particularly effective for patients who have experienced significant weight loss or have excessive loose skin in the midsection. It has become very popular in the past few years due to the success our patients have experienced with bariatric surgery and weight loss medications.

Reasons for Fleur-de-Lis Abdominoplasty:

The fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty is suitable for individuals who have:

  • Significant weight loss: After significant weight loss, the skin in the abdominal area may become loose and saggy. The fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty can remove excess skin and tissue, creating a smoother and more toned appearance.
  • Excessive loose skin: Some individuals may naturally have excess skin in the abdominal area, which can be a source of self-consciousness and discomfort. The fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty can effectively remove this excess skin and create a more contoured silhouette.

    Procedure:

Fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and can take approximately three to four hours, depending on the extent of the procedure. Dr. Landis will make a horizontal incision along the lower abdomen, typically from hip to hip, below the bikini line, similar to a traditional tummy tuck incision. In addition, a vertical incision is made from the lower incision to the sternum, creating a “fleur-de-lis” or upside-down T shape. The length and shape of the incision may vary based on individual needs and goals. Dr. Landis will carefully remove excess skin and tissue from the abdominal area, both horizontally and vertically. This allows for more comprehensive removal of excess skin and a greater degree of contouring and cinching the waist.

Dr. Landis will repair weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) to create a firmer and flatter abdominal wall. This results in a feeling of a stronger, more stabilized core. The remaining skin is then repositioned and tightened to create a smoother appearance. Dr. Landis will often liposuction the flank area to further enhance the result. The belly button is delivered to the correct position and all incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures. One surgical drain is placed to remove excess fluid during the initial stages of healing, surgical tape dressings are applied, and the patient is placed in a compression garment.

    Recovery and Aftercare:

Recovery from a fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty will vary from patient to patient. It is normal to experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated area. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage any post-operative pain and nausea.

Patients should follow Dr. Landis’s post-operative instructions regarding incision care, medication, and activity restrictions. It is important to take time off work and avoid strenuous activities for several weeks to allow for proper healing. Typically a patient will rest at home for 2 weeks, and participate in light activity only for an additional 2 weeks. Beginning the fourth week patients may resume light exercise, gradually increasing more strenuous activity.

A compression garment will be worn to provide support to the healing tissues and minimize swelling for 6 weeks. It is essential to attend follow-up appointments with Dr. Landis to monitor the healing process and address any concerns.

    Potential Risks and Complications:

Like any surgical procedure, the fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty carries some risks and potential complications. These may include:

    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Poor scarring
    • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
    • Numbness or changes in sensation
    • Wound healing issues
    • Blood clots
    • Anesthesia risks

Dr. Landis will discuss these risks with you and address any concerns or questions you may have before deciding to undergo a fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty.

    Cost:

Fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty cost includes the surgeon fee, facility fee, anesthesia fee, and any labs or imaging that may be required before or after surgery. The total cost for a fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty ranges from $12,500 – $15,000 and varies if any additional surgery is required. Dr. Landis will formulate a plan specific for each patient and a detailed estimate will be provided. CareCredit is available to our patients, and we’d be happy to discuss this option with you!

    Conclusion:

The fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty is a specialized tummy tuck procedure that can effectively address excess skin and tissue in the abdominal area. It is particularly suitable for individuals who have experienced significant weight loss or have excessive loose skin. By removing excess skin and contouring the abdomen, the fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty can help patients achieve a smoother and more toned appearance. It is important to consult with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss goals, expectations, and potential risks before deciding to undergo a fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty. Dr. Landis has expertise in this surgery, as it has become increasingly popular over the past decade. The results can truly be life changing!
