Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males, often due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, obesity, or the use of certain medications. It can affect one or both breasts and sometimes causes discomfort or self-consciousness. The primary goal of gynecomastia surgery is to reduce breast size, flatten the chest, and enhance chest contours. It can also alleviate physical discomfort associated with the condition.

Procedure:

Gynecomastia surgery typically involves one or both of the following techniques:

  • Liposuction: Suitable for cases where excess fatty tissue is the primary cause. Small incisions are made, and a thin tube (cannula) is used to suction out excess fat.
  • Excision Techniques: Required when glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed. Incisions are typically made around the areola or within the natural creases of the chest.

In some cases, a combination of liposuction and excision is used to achieve optimal results. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 1-2 hours depending on the complexity of the specific case. The incisions are carefully closed with dissolvable sutures, and dressings are applied to protect the incision sites. No drains are placed during this surgery.

Recovery and Aftercare:

We strive to make aftercare as simple as possible for our patients and understand that most men are anxious to return to an active lifestyle. After gynecomastia surgery, patients may experience temporary soreness, swelling, and bruising. A supportive ACE wrap dressing is provided on the day of surgery and is worn continuously for the first week to minimize swelling and provide support during the healing process. Daily dressing changes are not required. It is essential to follow Dr. Landis’ post-operative instructions regarding medication, wound care, and physical activity restrictions.

Gynecomastia surgery patients are instructed to rest at home for one week, refraining from driving or lifting anything greater than 5 lbs. Patients may shower 2 days after surgery, but may not submerge in a bath tub or pool for 6 weeks. After one week a patient may return to normal daily activities and a desk job. Patients with a more physically demanding job may require more time off work. All patients are cleared at 3 weeks to slowly resume exercise activities.

Potential Risks and Complications:

While gynecomastia surgery is generally considered safe, it is important to be aware of the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure. These may include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Fluid collection (seroma)
  • Changes in nipple sensation, either increased or decreased
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry
  • Wound healing issues
  • Anesthesia risks

Dr. Landis will discuss these risks with you and address any concerns or questions you may have before deciding to undergo gynecomastia surgery.

Cost:

Gynecomastia surgery cost includes the surgeon fee, facility fee, anesthesia fee, and any labs or imaging that may be required before or after surgery. The total cost for gynecomastia surgery ranges from $6,000-10,000 and varies if any additional surgery is required. Dr. Landis will formulate a plan specific for each patient and a detailed estimate will be provided. CareCredit is available to our patients, and we’d be happy to discuss this option with you!

Conclusion:

Gynecomastia surgery can be a life-changing procedure for many men, alleviating physical discomfort, improving body image, and enhancing overall quality of life for individuals with gynecomastia. Most patients are extremely satisfied with their improved chest appearance and increased self-confidence. It is important to consult with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Landis to determine if gynecomastia surgery is suitable for you and to discuss your goals, expectations, and potential risks. A personalized treatment plan will be created to achieve the desired breast size and shape while ensuring the best possible outcome.
