A lip lift is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the appearance of the lips by shortening the distance between the upper lip and the base of the nose. It aims to create a more youthful, balanced, and proportionate lip shape and improve the overall aesthetics of the face. Lip lift surgery can be performed on individuals who desire fuller and more defined lips or those who have age-related changes in their lip structure. It is often performed at the same time as a facelift to enhance facial rejuvenation.

Reasons for Lip Lift:

  • Desire fuller and more defined lips: Some individuals may have naturally thin or flat upper lips that lack volume and definition. Lip lift surgery can help create a more pronounced and attractive lip shape by raising the position of the upper lip.
  • Experience age-related changes in lip structure: As we age, the distance between the upper lip and the base of the nose can lengthen, resulting in a less youthful appearance. Lip lift surgery can address this by shortening the distance and restoring a more youthful lip position.
  • Are not achieving desired results with lip fillers: Many women have hyaluronic acid fillers placed into their lips to enhance lip shape. In some women a lip lift is a more appropriate method to achieve their goals.

    Procedure:

The lip lift procedure typically can be performed under local anesthesia in the office or general anesthesia if paired with another procedure. The choice of anesthesia depends on the patient’s preference and Dr. Landis’ recommendation. Dr. Landis will make a small incision at the base of the nose, within the natural crease, and along the border of the nostrils. The choice of incision location depends on the patient’s anatomy and desired outcome. Dr. Landis will carefully remove a small amount of skin and tissue from the area above the upper lip. This shortens the distance between the lip and the nose and lifts the upper lip. Most commonly this excision resembles a “bullhorn” which contours exactly to the nasal crease. The remaining tissue is then precisely repositioned and sutured in place. Once the tissue repositioning is complete, the incisions are closed using dissolvable sutures.

    Recovery and Aftercare:

Recovery from a lip lift surgery varies from patient to patient. You will receive specific instructions on how to care for your incisions, including keeping them clean and applying prescribed ointments or dressings as directed by Dr. Landis. Swelling and bruising are common after a lip lift and may take several weeks to subside. Applying cold compresses and keeping your head elevated can help reduce swelling and promote healing. Very low dose pain medication will be prescribed to manage any post-operative discomfort. Most patients manage discomfort with Tylenol or ibuprofen alone. It is important to take the medication as directed and communicate any concerns to Dr. Landis. If non-dissolvable sutures are used, they will be removed within a week after surgery during a follow-up appointment with Dr. Landis. Most patients can resume normal activities, including work and light exercise, within one week after surgery. Strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks. Protecting your lips from trauma and avoiding activities that may strain the incisions is essential during the healing process. It is also important to follow Dr. Landis’ instructions regarding skincare and sun protection. Initially the scar is pink, but easy camouflaged with makeup. Over a period of 3-6 months the scar fades.

    Potential Risks and Complications:

Like any surgical procedure, lip lift surgery carries potential risks and complications. These may include:

    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Poor wound healing
    • Changes in sensation
    • Scarring
    • Unsatisfactory aesthetic outcome

Dr. Landis will address any concerns or questions you may have before deciding to undergo a lip lift.

    Cost:

Lip lift cost includes the surgeon fee, facility fee, anesthesia fee, and any labs or imaging that may be required before or after surgery. The total cost for a lip lift ranges from $2,750-$4,500 and varies if any additional surgery is required. Dr. Landis will formulate a plan specific for each patient and a detailed estimate will be provided. CareCredit is available to our patients, and we’d be happy to discuss this option with you!

    Conclusion:

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that can enhance the appearance of the lips by shortening the distance between the upper lip and the base of the nose. It can create fuller, more defined lips and improve overall facial aesthetics. If you are considering a lip lift, it is important to consult with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Landis who can evaluate your individual needs and goals, discuss the potential risks and benefits, and create a personalized treatment plan to achieve the desired results. Lip lift is a minor procedure that can deliver major results!
